Permission granted by An Bord Pleanála for development of Players Square

16 April 2008

An Bord Pleanála has granted permission for the Players Square scheme on South Circular Road, comprising the former John Player factory and the Bailey Gibson industrial premises. The scheme covers 4.32 hectares and the proposed total floor area of the development is almost one million sq feet over 16 buildings ranging from 2 to 12 storeys, with associated car parking and open spaces.

Players Square is being developed by a joint venture between Bee Bee Developments Ireland Ltd and the Walls Group. The company applied in 2006 for permission to develop the scheme and were granted permission by Dublin City Council which was subsequently appealed to Bord Pleanála.

There are conditions attaching to the permission granted by An Bord Pleanála, relating to some aspects of the scheme. These are being examined by the developers and any changes to the scheme that are necessary will be made in accordance with these conditions.

The permission provides for a major residential, retail and community focus for south central Dublin. A total of 754 homes, as well as significant retail space including a supermarket and home textile store, are included in the plans as well as extensive community facilities comprising a 16-class school, a medical centre, a leisure centre with swimming pool, 2 creches, 2 community centres, restaurants and cafes. The office accommodation will comprise own door offices totalling almost 30,000 sq feet.

The development architects were led by Gerry Cahill of Gerry Cahill Architects (GCA) and Michael Grace of Newenham Mulligan Associates (NMA).
